Every name announced in the draft started small, on a team where nobody was breaking down film.

The Assistant Coach You Never Had

Here’s a number that never makes the box score: the average youth coach spends close to ZERO hours a week on film.

Not because they don’t want to. Because they can’t, they’re volunteering. They’ve got jobs, kids, and whatever gym time they could book. Breaking down game film is a luxury reserved for teams with staff.

NBA teams have entire analytics departments. College programs have grad assistants whose whole job is breaking down film, a craft somewhere between art and science.

So many coaches are on their own. So many of our adult teams don’t even have coaches.

That’s the gap we’re out to close.

We refreshed our AI game summaries quietly earlier this month. Cleaner, sharper, and easier to read on a phone.

The summaries themselves aren’t new for us. We’ve been writing them since early 2024. Recently, one of the biggest names in sports video announced they’re rolling out AI game summaries of their own. Welcome in. The more you see the game clearly, the better the game gets.

Three coaches, one stretch of Tobacco Road. Dean Smith at UNC, Mike Krzyzewski at Duke, Jim Valvano at NC State. Smith was already a king. K and Valvano arrived nine days apart in 1980 to take the throne. The decade that followed was equal parts war and respect.
